In this video, we explain the latest development related to the UPSC empanelment process for State DGPs, the Supreme Court’s directions, and the legal framework governing the appointment of the Head of Police Force in states. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has revised its procedure after observing that several States were delaying the submission of proposals for selecting the next DGP or appointing “acting DGPs”, which the Supreme Court has clearly stated is not permissible. According to the apex court’s earlier ruling in the Prakash Singh case, State Governments must send the list of eligible officers to the UPSC at least three months before the retirement of the current DGP.
