Going to Central America? GO TO GUATEMALA! Hostels listed below Guatemala is one of my favourite countries. It's full of diverse landscapes which include volcanos, rainforests, ancient Mayan sites, and more! We crossed the boarder from Belize into Guatemala by bus, dropping us in San Agustín Lanquín - roughly 45 mins away from Greengo's Hotel (our hostel in Semuc Champey). We then took a taxi part way and Greengo's send a truck to get us. It was quite the trek to get there. BUT SO WORTH IT. We even plan on going back to visit Greengo's Hostel one day. During our stay at Greengo's Hotel, we went to visit the Semuc Champey waterfalls, watched a local soccer tournament, explored caves with a candle, cliff jumped, floated down the river in tubes, and partied around a campfire. We loved the hostel and the people staying there so much that we were easily persuaded to extend our stay. From Semuc Champey, we took a collectivo to Antigua. We stayed at Big Foot Hostel in downtown. Antigua is renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings and is surrounded by volcanoes. I, unfortunately, got so ill in Antigua (if you've been to Guatemala - it's probably happened to you lol), so I couldn't hike Acatenango! This is a bucklist thing to do so I HAVE TO GO BACK. Shea and Michele recorded their hike so I could kinda experience it too. When you hike to the top, you spend the night camping at base camp and wake up at 4am to watch Volcan Fuego erupt! We spend our time exploring Antigua (it's a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) and eating lots of yummy food! From Antigua, we hopped on another bus that took us to Lake Atitlan, a body of water in a massive volcanic crater in Guatemala’s southwestern highlands. We stayed at Hostel Sublime in San Pedro La Laguna, a smaller town on the lake. It is so easy to hop on a boat and explore all the other cities surround the water within one day trip! From Lake Atitlan, we were recommend to go to El Paredon, a lazy beach town that many people don't visit. It's on the Pacific side of Guatemala and very WORTH IT! It's around a 3 hour drive from Lake Atitlan and then you have to take a 10 min float to get to the main town (a sandy town). We stay at the Driftwood Surfer hostel that overlooked beautiful black sand beaches. The spot is perfect for surfers, beach volleyball, or petting puppies in the sand. (add this spot to your travels). *We thought we could hope on a bus and cross over into El Salvador from El Paredon, but it wasn't possible (there were no buses). So we had to backtrack to Antigua to get a bus to El Tunco, El Salvador. No complaints though, because we went to an empty pool party with a DJ when we went back to Antigua for the night! Anyways, I HOPE this encourages you to add Guatemala to your list because it's seriously so beautiful with even more beautiful people!
