In this eye-opening episode of SoccerBeat, editor Umjaka talks to former Bafana Bafana international Tsepo Masilela about his FIRST PAY CHEQUE. The now 39-year-old Tsepo Masilela was a highly regarded left back who worked his way from the semi-pros to the biggest club competition in the world, the UEFA Champions League, with Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa as well as plying his trade in the Spanish La Liga where he turned out for Getafe, before returning home to join Kaizer Chiefs and ended his career at AmaZulu. On the international front, things also turned out well for Masilela, as he also represented South Africa at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup on home soil. In this conversation, Masilela explains how he navigated his way up to the professional ranks, under the guardianship of the late Benoni Premier United owner Dumisani Ndlovu. He shares his journey from receiving his first pay cheque from Ndlovu in cash when they were campaigning in the third tier, while he was still a young teen in high school, and how he spent his first earnings. The former Bafana defender highlights how his earnings improved when his team won promotion to the PSL, and details the transition from an amateur to becoming a full-time pro, and how he managed his much more improved salary. Tsepo concludes by highlighting the even bigger changes he experienced in his earnings when he moved to Europe and the difference in the level of professionalism.
