Tozeur, Tunis - Part 2: The Medina

After an excellent Ramadan dinner at the Minaret restaurant we did an unplanned tour of the medina. A man on a bicycle approached us, claiming to be the president of the medina, and somehow got us to follow him into the old town to see the ruins of a caliph's house. Of course we suspected he wanted to act as a guide, but went along anyway as he did explain things quite well -- in French. He pointed out a lot of interesting things about door decorations. We knew for sure that he was a tout when we ended up in a carpet shop, so we were not surprised when he asked for money at the end of the tour. He suggested twenty dinars, which is way too much, but he agreed to ten, then asked for a couple more for the medina families. Anyway, it was the best way for us to see what was interesting in the medina. As it was a bit dark for photographs we went back the following day to see how much of the tour we could find for ourselves. Not a lot really, but we did find the carpet shop!
