Maneuvers to Release Shoulder Dystocia

During labor, the baby's anterior shoulder becomes impacted on the pubic symphysis as maternal forces propel the baby down the birth canal. The mother's contractions push the baby's anterior shoulder into the pubic symphysis stretching the baby's shoulder away from the head and neck. This continual stretching can cause irritation and injury to the baby's brachial plexus nerves. To assist in delivery, the patient is placed in McRobert's position, an episiotomy is performed, and suprapubic pressure is applied to try and dislodge the baby's shoulder. Finally, the doctor performs Wood's Corkscrew maneuver allowing the shoulder to be dislodged and the baby is delivered.
