Its Plaza Mayor has witnessed great events and kings and queens have walked through its streets over the centuries, which has left an important mark in the form of a rich monumental heritage. This small town witnessed a highly significant historical event: the Treaty of Tordesillas was signed there in 1494. This was an agreement between Spain and Portugal to divide the world, establishing an imaginary line 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. All undiscovered territories east of this line would fall under Portuguese rule, while Spain would have sovereignty over those located to the west (this led, among other things, to the emergence of Brazil, whose eastern end was located within the Portuguese zone). Tordesillas was a defensive bastion against Muslim invasion, its most representative building is the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara, a palace built by King Alfonso XI in 1350 and converted into a convent by his son, Pedro I the Cruel. Outstanding among the ecclesiastical buildings are the church-museum of San Antolín, declared to be a site of Cultural Interest in 1998, and the church of Santa María, a Gothic structure which was remodelled in the 16th century in the style of El Escorial. Other points of interest in the town are the Casas del Tratado (houses of the treaty), also declared to be a site of Cultural Interest, which are two adjoining palaces that received this name because it was here the Treaty of Tordesilla. Su plaza Mayor ha sido testigo de grandes acontecimientos y por sus calles han paseado reyes y reinas a lo largo de los siglos, lo que ha dejado una importante huella en forma de rico patrimonio monumental. Esta pequeña localidad fue testigo de un acontecimiento histórico muy relevante, allí se firmo en 1494 el Tratado de Tordesillas. Fue un acuerdo entre España y Portugal para dividir el mundo, estableciendo una línea imaginaria a 370 leguas al oeste de las islas de Cabo Verde. Todos los territorios por descubrirse al oriente de dicha línea quedarían bajo dominio portugués, mientras que España tendría soberanía sobre los ubicados al occidente ( Esto dio origen, entre otras muchas cosas, al surgimiento de Brasil, cuya extremidad oriental quedó situada dentro de la zona portuguesa). Tordesillas fue un antiguo baluarte defensivo contra las invasiones musulmanas, su edificio más representativo es el Real Monasterio de Santa Clara, un palacio levantado por el rey Alfonso XI en 1350 y transformado en convento por su hijo Pedro I el Cruel. Entre las construcciones eclesiásticas, destacan la iglesia-museo de San Antolín, declarada Bien de Interés Cultural en 1998 y la iglesia de Santa María, de estructura gótica.
