A return trip to the summit of Mt Bogong from Mountain creek. Winter 2022 #19 : Mountain creek - Staircase spur - Mt Bogong summit - Return. Distance : Probably 16 km return. 1400 metre height gain. Walking conditions : 4wd roads and the graded track to Mt Bogong. Crampons above 1400 metres, and snowshoes for the summit walk. Notes : The mighty Mt Bogong in all its winter splendour. Although the video doesn't completely convey the conditions on this trip, the winds on the summit were very strong. On the return trip I was almost blown off the ridge above the Castor and Pollux. Mt Bogong is probably the most exposed mountain I have ever been on. The summit area is high above all the land around. The snow conditions were only slightly better than the trip to Mt Feathertop a month earlier. This time I brought snowshoes to deal with the summit area. My favourite section on this day was where the stunted snow gums grow, just below the summit. The leaves heavily were laden with ice crystals that, when clinking together, made a sound like beads.
