Apparently, a lip tie is much less common than a tongue tie, a condition where a short, tight piece of tissue below the tongue restricts its range of motion. (We have another video on that!) Despite common belief, if baby has a lip tie, it does not mean he/she has a tongue tie and vice versa since these parts of the body form separately in the womb. The two conditions should be evaluated separately. If your baby hasn’t been evaluated for a lip tie and you are breastfeeding, talk to a healthcare provider if you notice the following signs of a lip tie: Being unable to latch deeply, if at all, causing nipple pain and damage Having difficulties staying on the breast Making a clicking sound Spluttering or choking on milk Cluster feeding Exhibiting poor weight gain Being at risk for bottle rot Developing jaundice Being excessively fussy or developing colic Some signs that you may as a breastfeeding mama include: Experiencing pain during feedings Having damaged nipples Struggling with engorgement, blocked, ducts, or mastitis Having milk supply issues (low supply due to ineffective removal; oversupply due to a demanding nursing schedule) Now, there are four different classifications of lip ties and each class looks slightly different, based on severity No significant attachment Attachment mostly into the gums area Attachment where the future upper front teeth will be Attachment that extends to the palate of the mouth If a lip tie is interfering with breastfeeding, it may be wise to consider a revision, no matter what class of lip tie a baby has. Left untreated, lip ties can: cause a gap in between the two front teeth. cause significant tooth decay, particularly in a baby’s upper front teeth. In some severe cases, a lip tie could impact speech. In order to get this treated, you should consult with: An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant who will be able to correctly diagnose a lip tie A Holistic Dentist who has experience with diagnosing and treating lip ties. You can work with these professionals to devise a treatment plan, including natural pain relief remedies if needed, as well as post lip tie exercises to prevent re-attachment of lip tie. Two of my three children had lip ties and we treated with laser. Thankfully, the procedure is super fast and wasn’t too intense for baby. Nursing right after the procedure was comforting for them and I didn’t notice any post-procedure fussiness or discomfort. I hope this video was helpful for you today. Thanks as always for watching!
