Nitin Chandrakant Desai Nitin Chandrakant Desai, a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, was a celebrated art director, production designer, and filmmaker. He gained fame for his exceptional work in both Marathi and Hindi films. Born on February 15, 1963, in Pune, Maharashtra, India, Desai's passion for art and architecture became evident from a young age, setting the stage for his successful career in cinema. Throughout his career, Nitin Desai made a significant impact as an art director and production designer in Indian cinema. His meticulous attention to detail and creative vision earned him immense respect and recognition in the industry. He contributed to a diverse range of successful films, including historical dramas, period pieces, and contemporary movies. Some of his notable projects include "Lagaan" (2001), a critically acclaimed Bollywood film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His extraordinary sets for "Lagaan" added to the film's visual appeal and authenticity. Another historical epic, "Jodhaa Akbar" (2008), also directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, benefited from Desai's stunning production design, which recreated the opulent Mughal era. Additionally, his set designs for the Marathi biographical film "Balgandharva" (2011) were highly acclaimed. Nitin Desai's creative talents were not limited to films; he also made a mark in the television industry, designing sets for several popular TV shows, including historical and mythological series. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Desai was an entrepreneur and owned ND Studios, a state-of-the-art film and television studio complex in Karjat, Maharashtra. The studio became a preferred shooting location for many filmmakers due to its cutting-edge facilities. Tragically, at the age of 57, Nitin Chandrakant Desai passed away under distressing circumstances, with suspicions of death by suicide. His lifeless body was discovered at his studio in Karjat, Maharashtra, prompting an active police investigation. Reports indicated that his company, ND's Art World Pvt Ltd, had defaulted on a substantial loan of Rs 252 crore from a financial creditor, leading to an insolvency petition against the company. The financial issues arose from repayment problems on loans borrowed from ECL Finance in 2016 and 2018. The total default amount as of June 30, 2022, stood at Rs 252.48 crore. Desai's company attributed the financial difficulties to a fire incident at the studio on May 7, 2021, resulting in property loss, and blamed creditors for sending a recovery notice on the same day. There were reports that the financial creditor had sought possession of ND Studio a few months before the incident. The circumstances surrounding Nitin Chandrakant Desai's passing remain uncertain, and investigations continue.
