The Wonder of Epiphany; Matthew 2:1-12

If we read Matthew carefully we quickly see that the Nativity plays so many of us have memorized over the years do not actually represent much of the story found in Matthew. Matthew has a very different focus where Joseph is more important in the lineage of David, where Jesus is born quietly in his hometown of Bethlehem, and where Magi from the east visit his house sometimes after he is born. We read the story of the Magi through tradition, not through text. And we read it as science or symbol, rather than narrative and spiritual truths. In Matthew we see the world coming to acknowledge Jesus as the long awaited Messiah, the anointed one, and they treat him as such. They are not cowed by political power, because they are following a bigger truth - that Jesus is here to change the world.
