Infant hip dysplasia – medically known as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) – is a relatively common condition in the developing hip joint. It occurs once in every 1,000 live births. The hip joint is made up of a ball (the top part of the femur bone) and the socket of the hip (the acetabulum). In infant hip dysplasia, the hip joint may be unstable because: the ball does not settle deep enough (or at the correct angle) into the hip socket, the socket is not deep enough to cover the ball of the femur, or a combination of factors including those above. The symptoms of hip dysplasia in babies are subtle during the newborn period. It is painless in infancy and early childhood but can cause pain and disability later in life if left untreated.
