Sunbeam, the Tokyo based tuning shop most known for its expertise in tuning BMW M cars, has long dominated the niche of BMWs in Attack. Many of the customer cars they tune end up having friendly rivalries on track, competing for fastest times. There's no greater example of this than the two Sunbeam supported E92s of Samuel and Tatsuro Shima. At Attack Tsukuba last weekend, in one of his NA Class super laps, Samuel was able to overtake Tatsuro to claim the title of fastest E9X at TC2000 with a blistering 58.792. Last season Tatsuro took the title with a 58.839 in the BMW Class at Attack (a class which has since been disbanded). Over the past few years, Sam has become meticulous about analyzing the data from each run and applying it to the car settings and his own driving in order to improve. To overtake Tatsuro, Sam made some significant changes to his E92 for this season. An entirely new rear aero package was devised that features a one-off bumper cut to accommodate the new rear diffuser. A new chassis mounted GT Wing setup cuts through the rear trunk, which is quickly removed with 4 aerocatch latches, and bolts onto the frame. Some Haribote Racing additions to the front splitter aid in front end downforce as well. Samuel finally took the leap and removed the air conditioner which allowed him to utilize a ram style, carbon intake that is ducting where the ac condenser used to be. The most recent 58.792, while good enough for the record, could still be at risk this season if we see Tatsuro back at the track. There is another E92, drive by Masakaze Hoshino, equipped with a supercharger and sequential transmission that has also been getting closer to the 58 second range. Needless to say, the BMW class of drivers at Tsukuba are highly competitive. This in-car video was taken after the record was set by Samuel, and the laps are in the high 59 second range.
