Whistler has officially opened for the season. This part of Canada has definitely had some crazy weather the last few months, and recent rains left a lot of people unsure about what the conditions would be like. The night before it was raining in the village and not especially cold, but it's amazing what a night can do... woke up to blanket of white across the village a welcome sign to what the mountain might hold. I met up with Brent and Eric at Blackcomb base and we waited near the end of a pretty solid line up. Lifts cracked a couple minutes early which was better than the delay the Whistler Gondola was faced with. As the gondola doors opened we knew we were in winter, moderate winds and fairly wet snow made for a fun baptism for anyone new to Whistler. The snow didn't spot a lot of the more exposed areas to be heavily windblown, but once away from the elements it was a different story. First couple laps getting warmed up and finding some powder on the sides of the runs, after dabbling in a little tree action, we found a low angle open tree run and decided to go for it. Smaller obstacles were well hidden, but creek beds and holes are still present and looking very dangerous, so always be careful where you are riding. We found most success in the mid mountain skirting between trees and parts of the mountain that aren't well visited. But after a while the heavy snow got all chopped up and our legs started to suffer because of it. Important not to over exert yourself on the first day, so after a tea break in the woods and a couple mellow laps in the afternoon on some low angle runs we decided to call it a day. Ski out looked possible but download is still recommended, we took a vote and decided to play it cautious and download. Remember it's easy to get carried away in the early season powder but there will be obstacles hiding under the snow. If you are going to venture in the woods just go little by little and make sure you have a riding buddy. Would also keep your nice boards at home for a couple weeks until the snowbase build up a little more. Thanks for watching and please make sure to like and subscribe, it really helps.
