It was F/A-18 Hornet, 250 of which were deployed by the US Navy, Marines and Royal Australian Air Force. Lt Allison of USN's VFA-192 took off from USS Kittyhawk on day three of the war believing he would provide Close Air Support to the advancing US Army units. He and his wingman were then diverted to another task but even that wasn't what they finally ended up doing.
