Sādhaka Reflections 007 - Tenets of Vedanta - 30 Nov 2025 1. Vedanta is a Pramāṇa — a means of knowledge – it is a means of knowing self Just like our eyes show us color and ears show us sound, Vedanta shows us our real nature. 2. The problem Vedanta addresses is self-ignorance (basic human problem) We feel limited, insecure, not-good-enough — because we take ourselves to be only the body and mind. All human sorrow — fear, insecurity, inadequacy — come from the wrong assumption 3. Brahman (the limitless reality) and Ātma (my true self) are one When śāstra says “Brahman alone is real,” it is not talking about something far away. It is pointing to our own Self. 4. The world (jagat) is mithyā — dependent reality It is real enough for living. Its dependence on Brahman is what we mean by mithyā. A movie is fully experienced, it makes you laugh and cry — but the screen alone is constant. 5. Spiritual growth is step-by-step. Spiritual growth is preparatory before knowledge No one can jump into jñāna immediately. The mind must be ready. We cannot satisfy hunger the moment hunger pangs come. First we need to prepare the food, then only we can eat. Preparing food cannot satisfy hunger. At the same time, we cannot eat unless the food is prepared. 6. Karma Yoga is the foundation Offering → “Whatever I do, I offer to Bhagavan.” - Every ACTION needs to be done with utmost sincerity and with fullest effort Acceptance → “Whatever comes, I receive as prasāda.” - Every RESULT has to be accepted with utmost reverence and with a cheerful spirit Contribute – Not consume Sacrifice – Not grab Reverential life – Not Materialistic Contribute more through Pancha Maha Yajna Reduce Arrogance through Ishvara Arpana & Prasada Buddhi Enjoy the process instead of outcome Do not expect gratitude Treat every experience as a valid lesson WORK is WORSHIP Triple A – Appreciate, Accept, Adjust 5 Cs – Clean, Calm, Cheerful, Confident, Compassionate 7. Vairāgya is not running away from life. It is healthy detachment, not running away Vairāgya doesn’t make you dull or isolated. It makes you lighter, less demanding, more cheerful. True detachment is: Less pressure Less dependency More clarity More kindness More inner peace Not sadness or isolation 8. Mokṣa is not an event; it is a recognition. Mokṣa is discovering what I already am We are not “becoming” Brahman. We are recognizing that we were always the limitless Self. This recognition removes fear and insecurity 9. The signs of genuine progress are very simple. Please remember — progress is not how much we know. Signs of growth: Less Irritation – More Equanimity Less Judgement – More Compassion Less Complaint – More Cheerfulness Less Careless - More Responsible Less Demand - More Grateful Depend Less on Results – More on Action 10. “Spiritual life” does not mean a dull, serious life. Joy is not opposed to spirituality. 11. Vedanta is lived in the mind, not in the Himalayas We don’t have to run away or become unpopular or become popular or leave your duties Vedanta is for people like us - Arjuna was right in the middle of action 12. Not all changes need to be external People think: “To grow spiritually, I must change my job, reduce social life, or avoid all enjoyments.” No. The Gita is very clear: Change the attitude, not the setup. 13. Desire is not the enemy — binding desire is Don’t let desires bind you. Don’t depend on them for happiness 14. Guilt is never a spiritual quality Many sincere seekers become harsh on themselves. "Why did I get angry? Why can’t I meditate? Am I failing spiritually?” Shastras encourage correction & moving on. A child falling while learning to walk is not wrong. 15. Emotions will not disappear — they become manageable People think if they attend Gita classes, anger, fear, jealousy should vanish instantly. We should become more aware, less reactive, and quicker in recovery 16. Spiritual growth is not visible to you — but others see it We might feel we are not progressing. But others often see: Argue less Complain less Recover faster Speak more thoughtfully Calmer Growth is often subtle. 17. Not everything will be understood immediately Vedanta concepts take time to digestclike: Mithyā vs Satyam Maaya vs Brahman ātma vs ānātma karma vs free will Listen again and again. Every re-listening of the Gita shows you something new, because we are growing 18. Sādhanā must fit our lifestyle Don’t try 20 practices; do 2–3 that you can maintain daily Consistency is important than Intensity 19. “Worldly success vs spiritual life” is a false conflict We can be creative and successful — without losing spiritual grounding. Just the purpose has to be higher, without harming anyone else - even mentally and without fear and insecurity 20. Lastly: spirituality is not isolation — it is integration the goal is: To become a better family member, better colleague, better friend - because the mind is more balanced
