THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN: RETURN TO RAMITELLI tells the story of a legendary United States Air Force squadron comprised entirely of Black soldiers. Until 1941, Black soldiers in the U.S. military were considered unfit for service and were limited to positions as cooks and stewards. However, that all changed when the United States Department of War authorized the creation of an all-Black fighter unit known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The squadron’s record of success would heavily contribute to the desegregation of the U.S. military only seven years after its formation. In this documentary, veteran Tuskegee Airmen return to visit the site of their operations in Ramitelli, Italy. We experience their legacy through World War II-era footage, animated reenactments, and interviews with Tuskegee veterans and historians.
