K. Lee Scott (b. 1950) is a highly regarded, prolific American composer especially known for his music for worship. In addition to composing, he also conducts, plays organ, and teaches. Scott has written more than fifty hymn tunes and over ten hymn texts. His hymns have been published in eight hymnals. Servants of Peace is a gentle setting of a text traditionally attributed to St Francis of Assisi (in a modern paraphrase by James Quinn). St Francis (d. 1236, Assisi) was active in central Italy (Umbria and Tuscany), where he established a monastic order from his followers. We know them as Franciscans. However, it’s possible that the lovely poetic text was written much later, perhaps around 1805. Regardless of the origin, this poem is much loved as a prayer that encourages us to transform negative actions and emotions into positive ones. This is a text for all times and seasons, and it seems especially necessary now. K. Lee Scott’s undulating melody consists of several short arching phrases that emphasize the key words with longer notes. His graceful tune is very “hummable” and memorable. — KN
