General Vishwa Nath Sharma, PVSM, AVSM, ADC, was Indian Army's 14th Chief of Army Staff. He held this position from 30th April 1988 to 30th June 1990. He belongs to a distinguished military family which had served in the armed forces for two generations with distinction. He was educated at Sherwood College. Nainital and later at the RIMC, Dehradun. He passed out from the Fifth regular course at the Indian Military Academy winning the Rajputana Rifles Gold Medal for tactics and leadership. He was commissioned in 16th Light Cavalry on 4th June 1950. As a Lt Col , he commanded the 66 Armoured Regiment. He saw action in the 1965 Indo Pak War and was the Col GS ( Ops) of an Armored Division in the 1971 Indo Pak War. He commanded a mountain brigade in an insurgency affected area and later an armored brigade. He attended the prestigious courses at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and National Defence College, New Delhi. He was the commandant of the College of Combat and took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command on 1st June 1987 followed by the command of the Indian Army. he retired on 30th June 1990 after completing 40 years distinguished service to the nation. After his retirement, he served on the boards of a number of prestigious companies. He was also a member of the National Security Advisory Board(NSAB) from 2006 -09. He is blessed with a razor sharp memory.
