Scenes from The Dorcas Ward Once you are standing in the operating theatre situated in the roof of St Thomas’ Church, you may start to wonder how the patients were brought into the space. It is a question we are often asked at the Museum. It wasn’t up the spiral staircase in the bell-tower, as this would have only been used by the bell-ringers when the church still had a bell. Instead, patients would have already been in the female ward of St Thomas’ Hospital, the Dorcas Ward. The Dorcas Ward was just next door to the theatre space at the same level on the second floor. A doorway connected the two spaces. This short film allows us to take a peek into what might have happened in the Dorcas Ward leading up to an operation.
