John Gilling was born in England in 1912, and per Wikipedia, spent some of his formative years in Hollywood, where he obtained unspecified (and uncredited) experience in the movie industry. Returning to the U.K. in 1933, he found employment as an assistant director, receiving his first screen credit for the 1935 musical "Father O'Flynn". He continued to work in support jobs on film crews up through "Black Memory," but the latter film also marked a major milestone for the filmmaker -- it was his first produced screenplay.
