In a virtual news conference, Rob Moore, the Conservative justice critic, and Garnett Genuis, the Conservative critic for international development and human rights, discuss their party’s concerns with amendments made by the Senate to Bill C-7, the federal government’s revised legislation concerning medical assistance in dying. They are joined by mental-health advocates. The federal government has signalled support for a Senate amendment to expand access to medical assistance in dying (MAID) to those with mental illness. Moore says he plans to move a motion at the House of Commons justice committee to hold meetings to hear from Canadians on the legislation and proposed expanded access to those suffering from mental illness. The Conservatives are also hoping that their party's amendment to eliminate the government's plan to offer expanded access will receive support from MPs.
