The church dedicated to Saint Quirico is the oldest in the valley and is located outside the city walls of Domodossola (Verbania, Italy). The ancient bell tower houses two very beautiful bells, which ring once a week when the church is open on Saturday afternoons. Bell 1 cast in 1605 (note A) Bell 2 cast in 1414 (note G) The main bell is the oldest bell in eastern Piedmont and one of the oldest in the whole of northern Italy. The church of San Quirico was built shortly after 1000, replacing an old pagan temple, which had been converted into a church after the arrival of Saints Julius and Julian in the 4th century. The church was directly dependent on the parish of Ossola, as reported in a news report of 1133. The church was remodelled and partially transformed over time, with the opening of some windows and the rebuilding of the upper part of the bell tower in 1500: the tower houses two of the oldest bells in Piedmont. In 1657, the Sacro Monte Calvario was erected, whose rector soon also took charge of this ancient church. The marvellous frescoes inside date back to between the second half of the 14th century and the whole of the 15th century, decorated at the end of the devastating black plague epidemic that had decimated the population. Half of the paintings date back to the 1300s, while the exceptional 1400s depictions replaced the old paintings from the 1100s, of which only the figure of two people and part of a horse remain today. Overall, it is one of the most beautiful churches I have seen in my entire life.
