Episode 71 of the Pioneers in Aged Care Podcast feautring Kelvin Neave, the CEO of Dougherty Apartments is LIVE. Kelvin’s leadership philosophy is rooted in visibility, inclusion, and transparency. He is known for having moved away as a leader, many years ago from "behind-the-desk" as a leader, and for being the CEO who is a constant presence on the floor, attending handovers and engaging directly with staff and residents. He even introduced a "Day in the Life" initiative where board members, twice a year, spend hours working alongside maintenance, care, and admin staff to gain a raw, honest appreciation for the daily operations of the facility. The results of this approach speak for themselves. Under Kelvin’s leadership, Dougherty Apartments boasts a staggering 95-96% staff retention rate and was recently recognized at the 2025 Future of Ageing Awards, where Kelvin was named the Aged Care Leader of the Year, nationally. We also discuss their clinical innovation as Australia’s top user of Neurons VR, using virtual reality to significantly reduce resident anxiety and improve clinical outcomes in a non-pharmaceutical way. Also, an award recently recognized at the 2025 Future of Ageing Awards for Innovation – Consumers. Looking ahead, Kelvin discusses the massive refurbishment project currently underway at Dougherty. Staying true to his consultative style, every resident, relative, and staff member was invited to be involved in the design process. Whether he’s testing the quality of resident meals or folding laundry to understand the workload of his team, Kelvin’s message is clear: to lead effectively in aged care, you must have a genuine passion and be willing to walk in the shoes of those you serve, every day.
