5th April 2024, 15:20 The final run of the holiday and it's a big vertical of nearly 900m. Hadn't realised the amount of vertical it's possible to do at Zell am Ziller, with the base station being so low, if you start from the highest point (Kapauns chairlift at 2500m) it's possible to do nearly 2000m, obviously earlier in the season while the home runs are still open. Anyway for this run we come off the Karspitz X-Press chair and head left onto the Red 13. The first section to 1:00 is just a long flat section, just about enough slope so you don't need to push. The run splits here with Red 15 heading straight on, while we turn left to stay on the Red 13. Nice snow on this part, without there having been a lot of traffic by the looks of things. It's a nice, wide slope as well with some long curving bends. Nice amount of trees dotted about the piste making it quite scenic, and with great views across and along the valley. The Red 13 crosses and meets a number of other runs on the way down and sometimes it's not always clear which piste you are on, however they all generally head to the Rosenalm area. Around 4:10 I think we end up on the Red 14 again, following the line of the Karspitz chair, while the 13 is going more to the right. Starting to get a bit more chopped up here and bumpy as it's quite a well used section. At 5:30 we cut off to the right, although not really necessary, as we are aiming to continue the run down to the gondola mid-stations which we could do whichever way we went. We head down and stop under the Rosenalm gondola at 6:50. The Karspitz chair is to the left and the restaurant to the right is the Kreithütte, which is usually busy and had music today due to the Lederhosen festival. At this point you would normally follow the Red 11 down to the mid-stations, however lack of snow meant tis was fenced off and closed so we had to follow the Skiweg, or strangely named - Funty-Piste. This is a simple track for most of it's length but does allow beginners a route down. It's quite a nice slope, being tree-lined and providing nice views as well. Note the big 'Funty-Piste' sign at 8:10. We continue to follow this and pass under the Karspitzbahn gondola at 9:45. This comes up from the same mid-point we are aiming for, where both gondolas run. Today only the top section of the Karspitz was running, while both sections of the Rosenalm were running to bring you up from the valley. Just after we pass under the gondola the run coming down from the left is the Blue 18 which can be accessed from the top of the gondola. Eventually at 10:15 we come to the Red 18, the Blue continues across but we go for the steeper option. It's quite hard work with the piste being a bit chopped up and the bright sun and dark shadows affected visibility a bit too. We cross the Funty-piste again at 11:45 but continue down on the steeper slope which is starting to have a few bare patches on it. We cross the easy piste again at 13:40 just above the gondola stations. Really quite bare here so a bit of care to avoid ruining the ski's. At the end we have the Rosenalm gondola to the left and the Karspitz gondola to the right. We 're heading into the restaurant for a well deserved drink. This is the Wiesenalm and has a great outside terrace on the other side of the building from here. Right on the mountain edge and great views along the valley. Well worth stoping here.
