Inside Otto Celera 500l a plane that revlutionized Aviation history Shaped like an elongated egg with wings and a stubby propeller hanging off the tail, the 500 L is designed to leverage the benefits of laminar flow an aerodynamic advantage that increases efficiency in flight by minimizing drag—to an extent never before seen in a production airplane. The Celera 500 L is a truly remarkable design. Otto Aviation says its odd shape delivers an astonishing 59 percent reduction in drag, and a massive leap in efficiency and range compared to traditional plane geometries. Arguably, this thing should have been electric from the get-go, so it's a no brainer that Otto has teamed up with Zero Avia to build a version with a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain. The whole thing is designed to maximize laminar flow – smooth layers of airflow with little to no mixing of adjacent layers moving at different speeds. This avoids the swirls and eddies that lead to air turbulence at speed, causing aerodynamic drag and wasted energy. Laminar flow is by no means a new concept, but Otto says it's pushed the idea so far forward with the Celera design that it uses 80 percent less fuel than a traditional design. No, that's not a typo. Otto claims the Celera 500L in standard fossil fuel-propelled form is "the most fuel-efficient, commercially viable business aircraft in the world." Its "flying suppository" shape might not win it any fashion awards, but if true beauty lies in perfect function, then this thing could be a bulbous supermodel.The 500L is a mid wing monoplane with a single five blade propeller in a pusher configuration. This results in no aerodynamic interference from the propeller, which is as far back as it can be. Laminar flow is used for its wings, fuselage, and empennage. Otto wants to compete with light business aircraft like the Cessna Citation CJ 3 plus jet or the Beechcraft King Air 3 50. The better fuel economy should lead to a low operating cost of 328 dollar hourly. The cabin accommodates six club seats, is about 72 tall, and will be equipped with a lavatory. It is expected to sell for 4.5 to 5 million, comparable with the HondaJet but with one third its operating cost. It should reach a cruise speed over 740 kilo meter per hour and as contamination can disrupt laminar flow, performance should be certified with turbulent flow, with a less than 8,300 kilo meter guaranteed range. The single R E D A 03 turbocharged V 12 four stroke aircraft diesel engine of 500 hourse power can operate as two six cylinder engines to provide redundancy. Because laminar flow makes the plane require less power, the Celera 500 L is equipped with a single V12 diesel engine at the back. “It was the most efficient aircraft engine we could find, to match the most efficient aerodynamic body,” says Otto. In the near future, the diesel engine could be replaced with an electric or hydrogen one, to make the plane emissions-free. “For now, we’ve reduced carbon emissions by 80% over competitor aircraft; on a per passenger basis, we are better than the airlines meeting the 2030 to 2050 emissions requirements,” Otto adds. The Celera 500L first flew in 2018 and has since completed about 50 test flights. So far it has only reached a top speed of about 251 miles-per-hour and an altitude of 17,000 feet, but a more powerful version of the engine, to be installed soon, will enable faster speeds and higher altitudes, closer to 40,000 feet.
