All surgeries do have complications or rather complication rate. There is no surgery which has no potential complications. When we say that there is potential complication, what it means is, there are possibility of any surgery going wrong. When we say this at the same time it does not mean that all surgeries go wrong and whenever we do any surgery. Most of the surgeries tends to be normal and without any complications. Nevertheless as I said all surgeries will have potential for complications and similarly it goes for cataract surgery. However the complication rate of cataract surgery is extremely low. In average terms worldwide the complications rate should be somewhere around anything between 3 to 4 percent in the cataract surgeries which is considered very very low. This makes cataract surgery one of the safest surgeries that a person can undergo and that too given the newer modalities of treatment like phacoemulsification, cataract surgery has never been safer. We have smaller wounds, lesser collateral damage to the tissues, more chances of the intraocular lens been put in place and put intact, the vision been better and the chances of refractive error, postoperative refractive error been very very low. In addition to this, when we do cataract surgery the complications that tend to occur usually get contained much better, that means we are able to manage complications much better than what we used to do because of better instrumentation that is available and even if something goes wrong during the cataract surgery, it is almost very very rare just because of cataract surgery going wrong.
