On 6 Mar 1988 three IRA terrorists from Ireland were planning an attack on British Forces in Gibraltar. The Special Air Service (SAS) launched Operation FLAVIUS, designed to prevent the attack. The SAS tracked down the terrorists and it was a race against time to prevent the car bomb from detonating. The SAS shot the terrorists but it soon became clear the terrorists were unarmed, and the car believed to be a bomb had no explosives in it. Was there a mistake? Did the SAS act illegally?
