However, in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, he contested again but lost to Trinamool candidate Apurba Sarkar, while the BJP emerged in second place with a margin of around 38,000 votes behind Trinamool. Congress slipped to the third position in that election. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Trinamool Congress once again led in the Kandi Assembly segment with a lead of nearly 13,000 votes. Congress finished second while BJP moved to the third position, indicating a changing political trend in the constituency. Despite Trinamool’s recent electoral advantage, the party believes bringing former MLA Safiul Alam Khan into its fold will strengthen its position further ahead of the next Assembly election. However, Congress leaders have downplayed the development, claiming that Khan had been in contact with Trinamool for some time. According to them, he had already been removed earlier from the post of sub-divisional president of the party.
