Vlog #51 takes us to downtown Santa Barbara for a walk along car-free State Street, a first visit to Handlebar Coffee Roasters, and an unexpected deep dive into local history. What starts as a simple coffee run turns into the exploration of something the attendant told me even surprises some locals! Great coffee, historic adobe walls, history, and towering views. After reviewing the brew (strong 9/10), I wander into the reconstructed grounds of the El Presidio Real de Santa Bárbara — the original Spanish military settlement — rebuilt beginning in the 1980s using traditional adobe methods. Inside are the chapel, kitchens, heritage gardens, artifacts, and demonstrations of early construction techniques, along with connections to regional adobe history and early California agriculture. From there we head to Santa Barbara City Hall for panoramic tower views over the city, coastline, islands, and red-tile rooftops — a recognizable backdrop seen in shows like Psych. Along the way: palm and plant spotting, historic plaques, murals, fountains, and a ride on the State Street shuttle. We wrap up with legendary tacos and a look at the changing downtown retail landscape. A coffee stop that turned into a full Santa Barbara history-and-views adventure. Thanks for coming along — see you in the next vlog.
