Throughout this email and video series, we've touched upon something called the left atrial appendage. It's a small pocket in the heart where most AF related clots come from. Today we're gonna look at it much more closely. In atrial fibrillation, blood stagnates in this area called the left atrial appendage. And this increases the risk of clot formation and stroke, and that's why it's often a very large part of the treatment strategy, either by preventing clots forming within it with blood thinners, or literally physically trying to find a way to close it off. Now, closure can be done during surgery with a clip from the outside, or it can be done with a catheter from within something like a Watchman device or some of the newer devices. These devices are not particularly reliable at sealing off the appendage presently, but I think in time that will change. So for now, surgical left atrial appendage clip closure is by far and away the most reliable way to eradicate this risk. Left atrial appendage closure is especially helpful for those people who cannot take blood thinners long term due to bleeding risks, but even those on anticoagulants may benefit from this added protection, particularly if we as surgeons are in there anyway. Now, it's one of the most effective ways actually for us to reduce stroke risk in atrial fibrillation, not just the blood thinner, and it often goes hand in hand with any ablation protocol that will be applied to your atrial fibrillation.
