(23 Feb 1997) English/Nat During the day she keeps a gun under the seat and at night she often hides a male friend in the boot of her car....she is Jordan's first woman taxi driver. Myassar Abul-Hawa would in any other country be one of many female taxi drivers but in this male dominated Arab nation she stands out as unusual. Myassar Abul-Hawa day starts with a visit to her office - she's Jordan's first woman taxi driver. Her office is an all male environment but that doesn't worry her - after a month on the job she says she relishes it, especially since her job has made her something of a celebrity in Jordan's capital Amman. In Jordan women are banned from jobs deemed dangerous, and from working after dark. Happily for Abul-Hawa the law on night work is rarely enforced, but just for safety a male friend often hides in the trunk of her car. SOUNDBITE: (English) I stay three hours I feel I am going to suffocate SUPER CAPTION: A friend of Myassar Abul-Hawa Abul Hawa is 52, has a degree in English Literature and worked as a tutor in Beirut. But since fleeing Lebanon's civil war in 1975, she hasn't found similar work. She began driving to help support her eight children. SOUNDBITE: (English) Q: What gave you the idea to become a taxi driver in Jordan? A: My son kicked me out of my house after my husband died of a heart attack in 1993. I had no money to eat I had to work to make ends meet. But I am proud to be Jordan's first woman in driving a taxi. SUPER CAPTION: Myassar Abul-Hawa Women make up only 14 per cent of Jordan's workforce. Laws on marriage , divorce and inheritance still favour men. But there is a benefit to working in this male dominated society. Many devout Muslim men don't want their wives and daughters alone with male cabbies - so they call to ask for her by name.
