Here are the Top 5 best-selling Nintendo games of all time. Starting at number 5 is Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, with 47,440,000 sales. While Pokémon has become the highest-grossing franchise in the world, did you know there’s a world where the games that started the franchise off almost didn’t happen? When Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri first pitched the idea to Nintendo, the company thought it was too ambitious. Luckily, there was one man in the meeting who believed in the vision: Shigeru Miyamoto. With his support, the game went on to be a massive success and is credited with saving the original Game Boy. Next at number 4 is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with 48,190,000 sales The timing of this one could not have been any better, as COVID-19 shut down the world just a few days before the game’s release. Along with its own mini “barbenheimer” moment with Doom Eternal, New Horizon quickly became the second-best-selling game of 2020 as well as the best-selling game in the franchise’s history. While the COVID pandemic feels like a lifetime ago, New Horizon’s immense success will be a bright spot in that moment of history. In third place is the original Super Mario Bros with 58,000,000 copies sold. Did you know, in the early 90s, a survey found that Mario was more recognizable to American Children than Mickey Mouse? It’s arguably the most iconic game of all time, and was supposed to be the last cartridge game Nintendo ever produced. However, thanks to its success, it made the NES into the best-selling console of the 80s, and turned Nintendo and Mario into a household name. Coming in as the runner up is another Mario title with Mario Kart 8, which sold 77,320,000 copies. This one is a bit contentious, as Mario Kart 8 and Deluxe are technically the same game released across 2 separate consoles. Still, we had to include it. The original version on the WiiU was the fastest-selling game on the console, selling 1.2 million copies in its first 4 days on sale, and half of the WiiU owners having a copy. Meanwhile, the deluxe version of the game also found similar success on the Switch, becoming the fastest-selling Mario Kart title with 459K sales in the US on launch day before becoming the best-selling game on the Switch in 2019 and eventually the best-selling Mario Kart title in 2021. Finally, in first place with 82,900,000 sales, is [drum roll] Wii Sports. Sure, it didn’t feature any iconic Nintendo characters when it came out, but it’s hard to argue against the massive impact Wii Sports had upon launch. The game played a major role in the immense success of the Nintendo Wii as the perfect game to show off the capabilities of the console upon release. True to its name, Wii Sports even garnered a ton of attention for its use as a means for physical activity, as the game has been used to help in physical therapy for everything from general rehab to stroke victims. All in all, the game’s legacy spreads outside of just gaming to the point where the best selling Nintendo game and third best selling video game of all time was eventually put into the video game hall of fame in 2023. #nintendo #gaming #videogames
