Greek navy frigates arrive off Cyprus to help bolster island's defences

Greek navy frigates Kimon and Psara arrived at Cyprus' main port of Limassol Wednesday to help bolster the island nation's defenses against potential drone and missile attacks. According to Associated Press Greece dispatched its two state-of-the-art warships after a Shahed drone damaged a hangar inside a British air base on the island's southern coastline just after midnight Monday. British jets downed two drones approaching RAF Akrotiri around noon Monday. The Psara is equipped with battle-tested anti-drone and anti-missile systems that have made numerous interceptions in the Red Sea where it had been deployed to protect international shipping from Houthi attacks. The Kimon is Greece's latest acquisition and is touted to be among the most advanced warships in the world. Following Monday's drone attack, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides contacted fellow European Union leaders for assistance to help shield the small country from any further attacks. Apart from Greece, France is sending a frigate as well as land-based anti-missile and anti-drone systems. The French frigate is expected to arrive later Wednesday. Germany has also agreed to send assistance and the Cypriot Defense Ministry is in contact with its German counterpart to finalize how Berlin can contribute, according to Cyprus government spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis. Christodoulides has said that Cyprus is in no way participating in any military operations. The drone strike on RAF Akrotiri came shortly after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he consented to the use of British bases by U.S. forces for "defensive" operations in Iran.
