In the early morning of May 19, 1919, a man named Samuel Pritchard walked into the post office in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and asked to send a telegram. The clerk, Mrs. Helena Voss, would later tell the county recorder that she recognized him immediately, though she had not seen him in three years. She said his hands shook when he wrote the address. She said he smelled of woodsmoke and something else she couldn't name. She said he looked at her only once, and that his eyes were the eyes of someone who had stopped sleeping. The telegram was addressed to his mother in Lewiston. It read: "Alive. Coming home. Sam."
