The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra's performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September 1991 is considered a classic performance by the band. The concert was recorded and broadcast by KJAZ 92.7 Alameda CA, the Bay Area's original jazz station. The recording captures the energy and dynamism of the band's live performances, which are characterized by tight arrangements and virtuosic soloing. The concert features an introduction by Jimmy Lyons, the co-founder of the Monterey Jazz Festival, who provides some historical context for the event. Additional comments are provided by John Clayton, the bassist and co-founder of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, as well as by Bob Parlocha and Stan Dunn, who were radio hosts for KJAZ. The performance itself is a tour-de-force of big band jazz, with standout performances of classic jazz standards like "Take the A Train," "Fly Me to the Moon," and "Stompin' at the Savoy." The band's soloists are particularly impressive, with saxophonists Jeff Clayton and Rickey Woodard, trumpeter Snooky Young, and pianist Bill Cunliffe all delivering memorable performances. Overall, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra's live performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1991 is regarded as a masterclass in big band jazz. The band's tight arrangements, swinging rhythm section, and virtuosic soloing make for an unforgettable listening experience, and the recording is a testament to the enduring power of the jazz tradition. The three musicians had previously played together in various settings, and decided to form a big band to showcase their shared love of jazz. The band's early performances took place at the famous Los Angeles jazz club, the Moonlight Tango Cafe. They quickly gained a reputation for their high-energy performances and tight arrangements, which drew on the rich legacy of big band jazz. Over the years, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and vocalists, including Diana Krall, Gladys Knight, and John Pizzarelli. They have also performed with symphony orchestras and at jazz festivals around the world. The band's discography includes more than a dozen albums, including several live recordings. They have been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, and their 2005 album "Live at MCG" was named Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
