I was delivering to The Granada Cinema in Tooting today and took a few minutes to try and capture the lavish interior from a bygone age. It is located at 50 Mitcham Road SW17 and is a historic Grade I listed building (the only 1930s cinema with this status) renowned for its opulent Gothic style interior designed by Theodore Komisarjevsky. Opened in 1931, it was the flagship of Sidney Bernstein’s chain, functioning as a top cinema and concert venue for stars like the Beatles Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Jimi Hendrix and Rolling Stones before becoming a bingo hall in the 1970s. I wonder if the original Organ that piped out music is still hidden away somewhere in there?
