O Death (2020) A cycle of 13 solo songs for soprano, hand held instruments and a looper (in one song). This video recorded as part of the 2021 OPEN Waters Festival, in Halifax, NS during the pandemic. Annie Martin - poet Janice Isabel Jackson - composer and performer (www.janicejackson.ca) Artist Statement: Our process in conceiving this project has been collaborative, improvisational and intuitive. Taking as a point of departure the scarcity of meaningful contemporary conversations about death, aging and mortality, most specifically from a feminine perspective, we have delved into historical and contemporary musical genres and our own imaginations and experiences for imaginings of death. We took particular inspiration from the song form in which a protagonist (the I of the song) speaks directly to death, as in: "Oh, Death..." This project becomes our own address to death as an interlocutor interwoven with life; we are free to pose questions, challenge, and converse. At the heart of this project is the paradox of the un-representable, unknowable and unforeseeable nature of death itself and the powerful desire to speak to and with our aging and our mortality in all their manifestations. Looking in the face of death presents itself as a spiritual experience in and of itself and is also the catalyst for an explosion of narratives and images. The songs are: Get this thing off me “Oh Death, you great composer and artist of humification” In Pieces “Oh Death, you wind the shroud” A Dude Chats with Charon “Oh Death, you are the cold, dark sea” A Girl Imagines Death as Exile “Oh Death, you took the white cat, her kittens, and the yearling goat” A Magic Realist Account of Her Death “Oh Death, you are a blinding light” A Painter Considers the Color of Death “Oh Death, what colour are you?” A view from the passage “Oh Death, you are (unthinkable) (except in cliches)” At The Threshold “Oh Death, you wipe the tables” Death Dance With Me “Oh Death, join me” Ideation “Oh Death, oh friend” Small Partings Observed “Oh Death, how continuously you break hearts” Chorus of the Cemetery “Oh Death, you washer of bones” Greed “Oh Death, oh nothing”
