Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a leading bacterial cause of community-acquired pneumonia in children. This study, performed by Tamara Garcia, MD, PhD, and Lilliam Ambroggio, MD, explores the clinical features, management and outcomes of Mycoplasma pneumoniae. While outbreaks of Mycoplasma pneumoniae usually occur every 3 to 5 years, the COVID-19 pandemic created a delayed emergence, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) observed a new outbreak in 2024. Conducted across six children’s hospitals, Drs. Garcia’s and Ambroggio’s study included 453 children to help determine differences in the presentation, care and outcomes between children with pneumoniae and those who had pneumoniae with the presence of Mycoplasma.
