What did bored sailors really do? They made scrimshaw. Back in the 1700s bored whalers would engrave pictures and designs into whale bones and teeth. The sailors called it Scrimshaw. Maurice Wheeler is a scrimshander and is determined to keep this "almost" lost American art alive. In his shop in Norcross, Georgia he scratches incredible detail into pieces of ivory. He's had a life-long love of the sea and this is how he keeps it alive. Whatever you do don't call his work costume jewelry. Each one is the result of hours of work under a powerful magnifying glass. Tiny scratches smaller than a human hair create image of people, sailing ships and mythical creatures. Think of it as an "almost" lost art or just the romance of the sea. Maurice Wheeler is keeping scrimshaw alive.
