Nikon Z6ii is undoubtedly one of the best mirrorless cameras Nikon has ever made. Being the 2nd generation professional mirrorless camera, it almost got everything right. Right from design, image quality, sensor stabilization, lens mounting options and weather sealing. Although its autofocus is good, it has much room to be improved. I like the Nikon’s choice to go with the Z mount which is absolutely versatile. Thinking back, there was a time when F mount lenses were adapted to e-mount cameras. From there we have come to adapt e-mount lenses to Z-mount cameras. Did you know that the DX mode of the Z6ii camera can be taken full advantage using the Sony APSC lenses? Sony APSC lenses are small, sharp and powerful. Z6ii on the other hand, switches to DX mode when you want to shoot 4k 60 FPS. This means, if you shoot more of 4K 60FPS in Z6ii, this combination is just perfect. You will see later in the video how well it performs. Sony has mastered the art of mirrorless lens manufacturing, given its decades of experience and is still trying to reach perfection. Nikon lenses are not too far, they are just a couple of generations behind. Infact, Nikon 180-600mm and 800mm tele lenses show the potential of Nikon’s lens manufacturing capability. Yet, Sony is currently bringing-in some amazing lens line-up and one such masterpiece is the Sony 50mm F1.2 GM lens. It truly is a masterpiece that everyone has praised on the internet and I can see why. Firstly, for a lens made for full frame cameras, it is small and light. Even the Fuji 50mm F1.0 which is made for crop sensor bodies is slightly bigger when compared to this lens and also feels a bit heavier. Nikon’s own 50mm F1.2 lens is huge and heavy which puts me in a panic mode of breaking the mount itself when mounted on the Nikon cameras. Even though Sony 50mm F1.2 lens is still front heavy when mounted on Nikon Z6ii, it doesn’t feel like it might break the mount. Well, if you are still wondering how I am able to mount the sony e-mount lens on the z-mount camera, I use the Megadap adapter ETZ 21. It is not as perfect as the FTZ ii adapter from Nikon but it does most of the things right. The adapter itself is just a ring with electronic contact which helps in transferring of EXIF data and helps with decent autofocus. As you can see in the clip, for videos, you might be able to get away with the slow focusing and catching-up game. It does catch-up with eyes and the subject eventually without noticeable pulsing. When it comes to still images, I get 1 out of 3 images tack sharp and the rest are a bit back focused. Just for the testing sake, I put the camera in the high burst drive mode and tried to spray and pray. Every image was out of focus when the subject was moving towards the camera. When the subject is facing away and moving away from the camera, I did not even dare to attempt taking pictures. Once the subject stops, I, once again, start to get tack sharp images. At this point, I would say eye-auto focus works really well for reasonably slow moving subjects. As a tip, if you are photographing people, make sure to use wide-area or auto-area AF - people mode. When the focus nails, the images straight out of camera are just mind blowing. It has a pleasing focus fall-off and the background is just buttery smooth. I just love this lens! I also love the fact that I am able to use it with my favorite camera, thanks to the Megadap ETZ 21 adapter. Working with APSC lenses when shooting videos is also such a convenience. With the small size, lighter setup and decent autofocus, it is becoming my favorite way of filming. The only thing I wish this adapter had was the weather sealing. That's it for the video. Thanks for watching and happy filming. #sonygmaster #sony #nikon #nikoncreators #Megadap If you like this video, don’t forget to subscribe, like, share and comment!
