Buen Shabbat i Janucá Alegre! שבת שלום וחנוכה שמח As we continue to commemorate and celebrate the victorious Light that a small group of Jews known as the Maccabees brought to the Jewish people against the Greeks, I also remember the many persecutions that the Jewish people have endured throughout history… Because it did not stop there. 🔥This song, “La kantika de Fuego” was inspired by the Sephardic “copla” “El Incendio de Saloniki” (The fire of Saloniki). Saloniki, Greece!The song was written after a devastating fire in 1917 that left thousands of Sephardic Jews without a home, consuming majority of the Jewish quarter in the old city. 🔥Another interesting fact is that on February 1943 Jews from Salonika started to be deported to Nazi concentration camps. 54,000 out of 56,000 Jews who had been living in Salonika before the war were murdered in the Holocaust. 🔥We must continue to remember, because history repeats itself.
