Our featured speaker on December 16 wasJo Brook, a Montana-native and New York City-based Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing actor and musician who was diagnosed with profound hearing loss in 2017. In addition to playing her violin and guitar, she spoke about navigating hearing challenges and working to come to terms with who she is as an artist and how her hearing loss is a part of it. Jo is the founder of an all-female bluegrass collective called The Snowy Mountain Sisters. Some of her favorite acting credits include Silent Sky (Asolo Rep), The Goree All-Girl String Band (New York Musical Festival), Wild Fire (Denver Center) and What Would You Do (ABC/Hulu). Jo is also on staff at A.R.T/New York as their Manager of External Relations. As a late-deafened adult, Jo is proud to say that she’s grown into her passion for advocating for safe & accessible creative spaces. With the grant and staffing support from the Center for Hearing & Communication in Manhattan, in 2023 she founded a support group for artists with hearing loss or those who identify as Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
