How smuggling really works: Drivers, operations and impacts

Description European states will gather on December 10th in Brussels for the Second Ministerial Conference of the Global Alliance to Counter Migrant Smuggling to discuss how to “break the business model” of smugglers. Yet the European Commission acknowledges that migrant smuggling has never been so profitable or deadly. Despite years of enforcement efforts and increasingly restrictive border controls, smuggling continues to adapt, thrive, and expand. To move beyond rhetoric and ideology, the Mixed Migration Centre’s report “How Smuggling Really Works: Drivers, Operations and Impacts” draws on a unique dataset of over 80,000 interviews with refugees and migrants globally and over 450 interviews with smugglers in West and North Africa, collected since 2019. The findings provide a rare, evidence-based understanding of how smuggling actually operates. What’s new in the report? How do the findings complement or challenge existing knowledge?
