Awaodori is a Bon dance that originated in Awa Province (now Tokushima Prefecture). It is one of the three major festivals in Shikoku, along with the Yosakoi Festival in Kochi and the Niihama Taiko Festival in Ehime, and is also known as one of the three major Bon dances in Japan. Since the calendar was changed from December 3, 1872 (lunar calendar: Tempo calendar) to January 1, 1873 (new calendar: Gregorian calendar), the dates of Obon festivals have shifted, and Bon Odori (Awa Odori) has been held on various dates, such as lunar calendar, new calendar, later in the month, on weekends, and on arbitrary days, which are less related to Obon festivals. Today, Awa Odori has spread beyond Awa Country and is held on a large scale in other areas such as Tokyo (see #Awa Odori in various regions).
