The Gospel of Belief Belief in Jesus - The Word Became Flesh John 1:1-3 Introduction: The Story of Intervention and Sacrifice Throughout history, there have been moments when people intervened at great cost to themselves. No act of intervention compares to what Jesus did—not at the risk of His life, but at the certainty of losing it. John 1:1-18 reveals Jesus’ eternal nature, His relationship with the Father, His role in creation, and His mission to redeem humanity. I. Jesus as the Word (Logos) – John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." To the Jewish audience, Logos was the powerful, creative voice of God that spoke the universe into existence. To the Greek audience, Logos was the rational principle that governed the universe. John makes a stunning claim: The Logos is not just an impersonal force—it is a Person, Jesus Christ, fully divine and eternally existent. Application: If Jesus is the divine Word, then His voice should define our lives. II. The Trinity and the Eternal Relationship of Love – John 1:1b-2 "The Word was with God, and the Word was God." The phrase "was with God" conveys intimate relationship—face-to-face fellowship. The Father has always loved the Son, and the Son has always delighted in the Father. Illustration: A hall of mirrors reflecting light infinitely. Application: We were created from love, for love. Our purpose is not self-centered but relational. III. Jesus’ Role in Creation and Humanity’s Rejection of the Light – John 1:3-5, 10-11 "All things were made through Him." "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." "He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him." Illustration: Standing in the sun but refusing to turn toward it. Application: Have we rejected the Light in subtle ways? Jesus’ Mission: The Word Became Flesh – John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." Jesus did not send a message from afar—He entered into our suffering. Application: Do we grasp the weight of the Incarnation? Invitation into the Divine Relationship – John 1:12-13, 17-18 "To all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God." Jesus came so that we might not just be forgiven, but welcomed into the very love and joy of God. Application: Are we seeking to know Jesus deeply, allowing His love to transform us? Conclusion: The Call to Respond Memorize this passage and let it shape your understanding of Christ. Immerse yourself in the Gospel of John. Live in light of God’s immense love, reflecting it to those around you. Final Thought: The Creator has stepped into His creation. The Light has come into the darkness. The Word has become flesh. How will you respond? Midweek Follow-Up Questions and Further Study Notes Discussion Questions: What does it mean that Jesus is the "Word" (Logos)? How does this deepen your understanding of His nature? How does John 1:1-18 compare to Genesis 1? What themes do both passages share? Why do you think people rejected Jesus as the Light? In what ways do people reject Him today? What is the significance of Jesus becoming flesh? How does this impact our daily lives? In what ways can we reflect God's love to others, knowing we were created for love and relationship? How does understanding the Trinity influence your relationship with God? What steps can you take this week to respond more fully to Jesus as the Light of the world? Further Study Notes: Read Colossians 1:15-20 to explore more about Christ’s role in creation and His supremacy. Meditate on Hebrews 1:1-4, which speaks of Jesus as God’s ultimate revelation. Study Isaiah 9:2-7, a prophecy about the Light coming into the world. Reflect on John 3:19-21, which further discusses humanity’s response to the Light. Practical Challenge: This week, identify one area where you need to let Jesus' truth shine in your life. Take one concrete step to align with His Word.
