In March 2008, Christies Lot #200 was the highlight of a quarterly New York-based auction. Impossible as it seemed, a lost masterpiece by Asia's single greatest sculptor ended up on the auction block for the entire world to bid on. The wooden sculpture was an early Kamakura-era Dainichi Nyorai, created in the yosegi zukuri style, containing some of the original metal exterior ornaments and crystal eyes (gyokugan). What made this particular sculpture so unique, though, is that never in its history had this hollow statue been opened, and the original dedicatory objects are still sealed inside. The Japanese bought this one back for less than $14.4 million, and, thanks to the help of UNESCO, it will never leave Japan again. This clip borrows breathtaking footage from a 2008 NHK special (『流転の運慶仏~「大日如来像」の謎を探る~』) which verified the history of this Dainichi Nyorai after it safely arrived in Japan after the auction. The accompanying audio is the original pre-sale lot description pulled from www.Christies.com (audio presentation by Jeffrey Olson, Associate Specialist, Japanese Works of Art, New York) Christie's online post-auction notes: http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lo...
