They said Firebase Ripcord was untouchable. They were wrong. In the summer of 1970, deep in the mountains of Vietnam’s A Shau Valley, a small American outpost became the site of one of the most intense battles of the war. For twenty-three days, fewer than two hundred men faced waves of North Vietnamese soldiers, outnumbered, outgunned, and cut off from reinforcements. At the heart of the siege was a single night that defined their courage. Eighteen men, trapped on a cratered hilltop, stood against an army of two thousand. Under constant artillery and machine-gun fire, they refused to yield. Every inch of ground was paid for in blood and shrapnel. Every breath was borrowed time. Firebase Ripcord was supposed to be a routine operation, a remote base meant to support upcoming offensives. But as North Vietnamese forces closed in, it became a death trap. Helicopters burned in the sky, supply drops vanished in firestorms, and medevac missions turned into suicide runs. The men on the ground fought with what they had: M16s, mortars, and pure resolve. By the time the order to evacuate came, the hill was a wasteland of twisted metal and shattered lives. Seventy-five Americans were dead, hundreds wounded, and the base itself obliterated by friendly artillery to prevent its capture. Yet, in those desperate days, the soldiers of Ripcord inflicted catastrophic losses on the enemy, holding back a force ten times their size. This documentary uncovers the forgotten story of Firebase Ripcord, the last major battle of the Vietnam War involving U.S. ground troops. Through rare combat photos, archival footage, and first-hand accounts, it explores the human endurance, leadership, and loyalty that turned an impossible defense into a legend. Rediscover the courage of those who fought when all hope was gone. The hill may have fallen, but their brotherhood never did.
