How Founders Get Stuck in a Life That Isn't Theirs

“Follow your dreams!” But how do you know they are YOUR dreams and not someone else’s? Sometimes for founders/entrepreneurs/builders/investors/creators, finally achieving your dreams creates a crisis: This wasn’t what you expected. This doesn’t feel how you thought it would feel. Too often the advice for this situation from therapists and self-help “optimizers” is that you simply need a “mindset shift” - but I believe this is a mistake. With my clients I ask a deeper question: Is this your dream to begin with? Are these really your goals? Is this really your "vocation", in the James Hollis sense of the term? In this video I detail some patterns I often see in my practice among successful founders and entrepreneurs. I take the view that refining your dreams through inner work is a necessary counterpart to the outer work of building a business or creative project. I describe how, paradoxically, crisis can be one of the best opportunities to deepen into your life. I believe this work of inner reflection is lifelong and that outer success is related to the inner alignment we find with our work, creative, and personal lives.
