Mixed media on paper is hands down my favorite artistic approach. Regardless of whether I’m working with watercolor, acrylic, pencil or gouache, I almost always create my paintings and illustrations on paper. The only downside to working this way, is that to display works on paper you often have to put them behind glass in a frame. This means that the beautiful texture of the paper and the materials are less noticeable. Years ago, I started mounting many of my finished pieces to wood panel, and absolutely loved the finished effect. It makes works on paper feel more like a painting, and allows you to hang them the same way you’d hang a canvas — without glass. I’ve shown bits and pieces of the process in videos before, but today I want to show and explain the process of how to mount works paper to wood panel from start to finish. This approach can be used on watercolor paintings, colored pencil drawings or any mixed media work on high-quality paper.
