Learn how to do a crimp fold, an advanced origami technique used to create texture, depth, and dimension in paper models. The crimp fold involves folding or pinching a small section of the paper to create a crease or indentation. It is often used to add details like scales on an animal model, wrinkles on clothes, or even create intricate patterns and designs. There are two types of crimp folds: The outside crimp fold. The inside crimp fold. Full Guide: https://zenfolds.com/origami/crimp-fold/ This tutorial is for intermediate to advanced origami folders and will teach you the steps involved in doing a crimp fold, including how to identify the different types of crimp folds and how to perform them accurately. What you will need: A square piece of origami paper A hard, flat surface to work on Instructions: 1. Start with a rectangular sheet of paper. 2. Rotate it so that the short sides are horizontal and the longer sides are vertical. 3. Fold the paper in half. 4. Make an arbitrary valley fold angled towards the left, around the halfway point, from bottom to top. 5. Now make an arbitrary mountain fold on the upper flap, angled towards the right, from top to bottom. 6. Flatten the paper. 7. Unfold everything and rotate the page until the creases look like two “V’s”. 8. This is the part where you choose if you want an inside or outside crimp fold. For an Outside Crimp Fold, make both of the bottom V’s into valley folds and the top V’s plus the spine into mountain folds. For a Inside Crimp fold, you do the opposite, make both of the bottom V’s mountain folds and both of the top V’s and spine into valley folds. 9. Grab both sides of the loner ends of the paper and push together while simultaneously folding in half towards you. Tips: When pinching the paper, make sure to use light to medium pressure. You don't want to tear the paper. If you are having trouble pinching the paper, you can try using a bone folder or a ruler to help you. There are many different ways to use the crimp fold in origami. Experiment with different techniques and see what you can create! Example uses of the crimp fold: Adding details to a model, such as scales on an animal model, wrinkles on clothes, or even creating intricate patterns and designs Creating texture on a model, such as the fur of an animal or the feathers of a bird Creating dimension in a model, such as the folds of a fabric or the scales of a dragon Additional notes: The crimp fold is often used in conjunction with other origami techniques, such as the squash fold and the reverse fold, to create more complex and realistic models. The crimp fold can also be used to create modular origami models, which are made up of many smaller, folded units that are assembled together. With practice, you can learn to use the crimp fold to create a wide variety of origami models, from simple animal models to complex geometric designs.
